MJS Genealogical Research is a sole proprietorship. It is a home-based business catering to the needs of law firms and assisting the firm in legal matters such as heirship searches for probate matters. A search is required in the event that an individual dies without making a will and it would be necessary to search out their next of kin in order to pass on any monies or possessions belonging to the decedent. After receiving information from the client, a research plan will be formulated and research begun. A research log will be kept of where the searches were made, the information analyzed and correlated, and a research report will be completed and provided to the client.
These searches can be done on an expedited basis and are not generally time-consuming although it is possible that a search could take some time to locate heirs. The owner’s services will also be marketed to the general public to perform genealogy services for those wishing to add to their family lines.
There is a basic charge of $40 per hour for the researcher’s time in doing research. There will also be charges for expenses including, but not limited to, local travel at $.58 cents per miles, copy costs of $.20 per copy, and parking fees. Reduced fees may be offered in special circumstances which will be discussed on a case-by-case basis. A retainer will be required from the client before work is begun, and the final payment must be made before the research report is transmitted to the client.
